FUQUAY-VARINA - County health officials issued a rabies notice for residents and visitors in an area of Fuquay-Varina.

The notice affects Stewart Street, between North Street and Perry Howard Drive, where a case of rabies in a raccoon was confirmed Wednesday.

The raccoon interacted with an unvaccinated dog that will have to be quarantined for six months or euthanized, according to a news release.

Wake County Animal Control officers said they are concerned about possible exposure of unvaccinated animals in the area — especially pets.

"We don't want to alarm residents in the Fuquay-Varina area, but they should be aware of this case and of the potential for exposure to themselves, family members and their pets," Michael Wlliams, the county's animal control director, said in a prepared statement. "This case is an example of why your pets should always be currently vaccinated against rabies."

Officials asked anyone who sees an animal acting in an usual manner to call 919-212-7387.

Vaccinated dogs and cats only need a booster vaccine if exposed to a rabid animal. If a person is bitten or scratched, they should clean the wound with soap and warm water and contact their doctors, officials said.
