Terrance Scott's fake punt run midway through the fourth quarter with the score tied 28-28 set up Wakefield's go-ahead touchdown. Scott ran 19 yards on a 4th-and-6 to push the Wolverines to a first down at the Holly Springs' 34-yard line.
Courtney Crews put the Wolverines ahead 35-28 on a 3-yard touchdown run with 5:22 left.
"We hadn't punted all game, and we didn't want to then," Wakefield coach J.D. Dinwiddie said.
Holly Springs, which beat Southeast Raleigh last week 28-27, could not stop Wakefield in the second half but did intercept four passes in the game. Kent Burnette turned one of those interceptions into a 54-yard touchdown return for Holly Springs' first score.
Holly Springs was out-gained 518-275 yards in the game but enjoyed a 28-14 halftime advantage. Mike Roach tossed a 2-yard touchdown pass to Markez Davis as the Hawks scored on the final play of the first half.
