Playing in front of their home fans in their schools first varsity football game, the Heritage Huskies stayed close to Holly Springs for nearly the entire first half before the Golden Hawks pulled away to prevail 27-0.
Shortly after a fumble recovery midway through the second quarter by the Huskies Hunter Winstead gave his team possession at its own 27, Heritage had the home crowd on its feet and an opportunity to open the scoring.
Moments later, starting quarterback Garrett Hudson dropped back to pass on third-and-19 and fumbled the ball while looking downfield. He was injured on the play did not return.
Making matters worse for Heritage, Holly Springs advanced the ball to the Huskies 6-yard line on the fumble return.
The Golden Hawks wasted no time capitalizing on the short field when Cameron White ran into the end zone on 3rd-and-goal from two yards out to make it 6-0 with 3:02 to play in the first half.
Huskies backup quarterback Jacob Colavita came on to replace Hudson and pitched the ball to running back Reco Jones, who was stripped in the backfield on the first play of the drive. Jamal Jacobs recovered for Holly Springs in Heritage territory at the 30-yard line.
The Golden Hawks needed four plays to find the end zone for the second time, scoring on a one-yard run by Davis with 31 seconds remaining in the first half.
With the momentum squarely in their corner, the Golden Hawks padded the lead on their most complete drive of the game, a seven-play march to open the second half. Davis started the drive with a 33-yard run, and then finished it from three yards out for his second touchdown.
Davis, who finished with 134 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries, said he was pleased with the way his team started the game and struck first.
We came out together as a team and were real excited, Davis said. We came out with a lot of intensity and hit them in the mouth early, which we had to do.
