Dangerous sports

We live in violent times. Young children play football, hockey and soccer, potentially dangerous games. In my day stickball and baseball were more popular, and an occasional ball in the head or eye was the greatest danger.

Today, the sports have effects on young brains which hibernate, only to show up years later. In the case of 16-year-old Michael Mendy, 3 years later, as his body degraded and his cognitive abilities went the way of an Alzheimer's patient due to several concussions ( "Death of boy, 16, is a mystery," The Cary News, Feb. 8).

Is it better to let our children do that which they enjoy despite potential dangers or ban them from these games?

We don't let our children drink alcohol or take drugs, but sports is not the same. It can't ruin your life, or can it?
