I would like to suggest that the General Assembly revisit the Routes 540/147 toll road issue. Like many other local residents, I avoid it as often as possible since it is a most costly convenience (one of the highest in the country). I cross the highway at least twice a day and rarely observe automobiles in either direction down below. It also appears that traffic on N.C. 55 in Cary and McCrimmon Parkway in Morrisville during rush times continues to experience build-up. Little seems to have changed. Except for rush hour, folks simply arent using these roads.
I appreciate the time-saving value of this roadway but it is underused and sends taxpayers day and night through gas-friendly and less safe back roads. I see no benefit to having senior citizens driving during hours of darkness so they can hang on to their money.
I know that once government locks into a money-maker, its not likely to do the right thing. However, I would like to suggest permanently suspending all tolls during non-rush hours every day. In this way, everybody wins. Taxpayers get to where they are going sooner, folks get to work faster, and the state gets our money.
