Football matchups

Middle Creek at Garner

This nonconference rivalry regularly packs the stands, and this year should be no different.

Can Middle Creek, fifth in The News & Observer’s preseason area rankings, beat the No. 1 Trojans for only the second time in school history? Garner leads the all-time series 9-1.

Green Hope at Cardinal Gibbons

Green Hope will be without starting quarterback Chris Tutwiler after an injury in last week’s scrimmage. The No. 13 Falcons will have to step up defensively to handle No. 9 Gibbons’ explosive offense.

Broughton at Cary

The traditional season opener for two of the area’s oldest high schools has been a 7-3 Cary advantage over the last 10 years. Cary leads 8-6 dating back to 1999.

Holly Springs at Heritage

No. 15 Holly Springs travels to No. 6 Heritage. Both teams are expected to do well this year, despite less-than-great 2012 seasons.

Athens Drive at J.H. Rose

The No. 17 Jaguars take a step out of the area and travel to Greenville to face Rose, which has the state’s No. 2-ranked player in Kentavious Street.

Millbrook at Fuquay-Varina

The first game for No. 18 Fuquay-Varina coach Jeb Hall comes against a Millbrook team whose quarterback, Lemar Harris, just committed to Wake Forest University.

Harnett Central at Apex

Grayson Boyd gets his first varsity start at quarterback for Apex, which will host the Trojans.

Panther Creek at Wake Forest

The Catamounts may be tired of close losses – they had eight in 2012 – but a strong performance will be impressive at No. 4 Wake Forest no matter the end result. This is a rematch of the 2010 4AA East final, which Wake Forest won.

Wake Christian at Chatham Central

The Bulldogs make a trip over one county into arguably the most rural high school in the Triangle.
