Week 6 Friday football games

SWAC Friday matchups

Middle Creek (3-1)

at Apex (1-3)

Middle Creek will try to regroup after its previously stalwart defense was gashed by Wakefield for 579 yards of offense in a 34-24 loss. Apex, which has two losses by six points or less, will need to capitalize on trips to the red zone; it scored points on just three of its six trips there in regulation of last week’s 37-31 double-overtime loss to Riverside.

All-time series: Middle Creek leads 9-1.

Athens Drive (3-2, 1-0)

at Panther Creek (3-1)

Panther Creek took what figured to be the toughest nonconference schedule of any SWAC team and produced a winning record thanks to a 34-21 defeat of Leesville Road. Athens Drive got off to a 1-0 start in SWAC play by pulling out a 41-26 win against Green Hope.

All-time series: Athens Drive leads 4-2.

Cary (2-2)

at Green Hope (3-2, 0-1)

Green Hope has the SWAC’s leading passer in Luke Massei and leading receiver in Eli Murrane, but its run defense will be the unit most needed to win. Cary, coming off a bye week, averages 286.8 yards rushing per game out of the Wing-T formation. Its only losses are to local powers Wake Forest and Garner.

All-time series: Cary leads 10-3.

Fuquay-Varina (3-1)

at Holly Springs (1-3)

Don’t expect many passes in this rivalry. Holly Springs is averaging 289 yards per game on the ground, while Fuquay-Varina is averaging 305.8. The Bengals, coming off a 31-14 win against Clayton, showed signs they’re settling in under new coach Jeb Hall. Holly Springs thrashed Jordan 43-12 for its first win, and its three losses came against teams with a combined 9-3 record.

All-time series: Fuquay-Varina leads 4-2.
