Football: Fuquay-Varina 14, Green Hope 12

Fuquay-Varina grinds down Green Hope for Southwest Wake 4A victory

CorrespondentOctober 13, 2013

— Fuquay-Varina turned back the football clock in this era of pass-happy offenses as the Bengals completed only one toss but still beat Green Hope 14-12 Friday night on the Falcons’ field.

That one pass for a first down allowed the Bengals (4-3, 1-2 SWAC) to run out the clock and end a two-game losing streak with the win over the Falcons (4-4, 1-3 SWAC).

Fuquay was facing a third-and-14 from its 27-yard line when quarterback Tyler Williams completed his only pass of the night in six attempts. It was good for 38 yards to Tyler MacBride to the Green Hope 35. The Falcons had used all their timeouts with the hope of getting the ball back, so Fuquay was able to take a knee to run out the clock.

“Our coach (Jeb Hall) said they’re expecting us to run, so let’s pass,” Williams said. “We don’t mind if we’re always running the ball if we win. We came together tonight. We we’re playing together in our losses.”

Williams carried 14 times for 58 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown with 3:36 left in the third quarter on a 4-yard run. He shook a tackler in the backfield and was able to roll around the right side to the end zone for a 14-6 lead.

MacBride only had four carries for 71 yards, but one was a 59-yarder down the right sideline for a 7-6 halftime lead. Including his 38-yard reception, he totaled 109 yards of offense in only five plays.

“They were playing great defense, but I got some great blocking on the touchdown,’’ MacBride said.

Green Hope (4-4, 1-3 SWAC) scored first on a 15-yard pass from quarterback Luke Massei to Demetrice Massenburg, but the Falcons settled for a 6-0 lead after a bad snap on the extra-point attempt. After Green Hope scored its second touchdown on a 29-yard pass from Massei to Elijah Murrane early in the fourth quarter, the two-point conversion pass to tie the game failed. The reception was ruled out of bounds.

Massei finished 21 of 37 for 190 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Murrane caught eight balls for 90 yards and one TD.

Green Hope could have had two first-half touchdowns, but 10-yard pass from Massei to John Nassif into the end zone that would have finished a nine-play, 72-yard drive was called back for a penalty. The Falcons ended up turning the ball over on downs without scoring.
