Week 12 SWAC football previews

November 4, 2013

SWAC Friday Football Games

Fuquay-Varina (6-4, 3-3)

at Middle Creek (8-2, 6-0)

This rivalry has usually determined who wins the conference, but this year Middle Creek has it wrapped up already. The Bengals are assured of making the playoffs but only as a wild card.

All-time series: Middle Creek leads 6-5.

Green Hope (5-5, 2-4)

at Panther Creek (8-2, 5-1)

Until now, these two rivals have never played when both teams had a .500 record entering their showdown. Green Hope should get into the playoffs with a win, while Panther Creek has the conference’s 2-seed tied up.

All-time series: Panther Creek leads 4-2.

Cary (3-7, 1-5)

at Athens Drive (4-6, 2-4)

Separated by only a handful of stop lights, Cary and Athens Drive have developed a rivalry in the nine years they have been conference opponents. Athens Drive must win to have a shot at the postseason. In three of the past four meetings, the game was decided by six points or less.

Last 10 meetings: Cary leads 6-4.

Holly Springs (5-5, 4-2)

at Apex (2-8, 1-5)

Both teams struggled mightily to hold onto the football in last week’s games played in a downpour. Although this game isn’t quite the rivalry of the other schools, it does have some history. Apex was Holly Springs’ first-ever varsity football opponent.

All-time series: Series tied 3-3.

All SWAC football games start at 7:30 p.m.

Other Local Games

Northwood (8-2, 4-2)

at Cardinal Gibbons (7-3, 4-2)

The winner of this game will get the 3-seed out of the Big Eight 3A Conference entering next week’s playoffs. The loser will be one of the highest wild cards.

Game time: 7 p.m.

Wake Christian (6-5)

at Harrells Christian (7-3)

The bracket makers were unkind to the Bulldogs, who are in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II playoffs, but listed as a 7-seed. Harrells Christian beat the Dawgs 54-14 during the regular season.

Game time: 7:30 p.m.

Player of the week

On a soggy playing field that grounded the Falcons’ passing game, Green Hope running back Demetrice Massenburg stepped up with 27 carries for 238 yards and two touchdowns in a 28-7 win against Apex.
