APEX — Assistant town manager J. Michael Wilson is retiring from the town of Apex after he was charged with driving while impaired on Saturday.
Wilson, 59, was stopped by Apex police about 11:40 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Olive and Wrenn streets, according to Town Manager Bruce Radford. He was about a block away from his home.
Town officials placed Wilson on administrative leave Tuesday afternoon. Wilson then turned in paperwork announcing he would retire.
Wilson’s retirement is effective immediately, according to a news release from the town.
Wilson worked for Apex for 35 years, Radford said.
“During his career, Mike has been instrumental in guiding and directing the positive growth and prosperity of Apex,” Radford said in a statement. “His commitment to the Town is unparalleled, and Apex is a better place today because of his many contributions. He has been the epitome of a dedicated public servant.”
